In my work with business owners, I’ve found those with absolute clarity on their personal reasons for running and improving their businesses are always the most successful ones.
When defining your "WHY", consider these three types of goals:
- Level One: “away from pain” goals that relate to problems you want to fix. This might include increasing your level of personal and business income so that you can meet all of your financial commitments and reduce your level of day-to-day stress. They might also include learning how to manage and lead your team better so that you can get better results when you delegate to them, ultimately allowing you to reduce the number of hours you work.
- Level Two: “towards pleasure” aspirational goals and dreams. These might include a new family home, a new car, a string of investment properties, exotic holidays and anything else your heart desires.
- Level Three: “bigger than yourself" goals are about giving back to your community and leaving your legacy. This might require generating enough excess profit from your business to support your chosen philanthropic causes. It might also include honing your talents and communicating your unique message to the masses as well as becoming a known leader in your field.
